A Closer Look at the Patek Philippe Celestial 6105G-001
Patek Philippe occupies a unique place in watchmaking. The house has been making watches in Geneva since 1839, and the Stern family has owned it since 1932. It remains the last of the great Genevan watchmakers still in private hands. For collectors who appreciate this heritage, the Grand Complications collection represents the peak of their watchmaking capability. The Celestial, Reference 6105G-001, is one of the most distinctive watches in this category.
The Celestial Dial and Complications
This watch displays the night sky of the northern hemisphere as it moves over Geneva. On its sapphire-crystal dial, you can track the stars, the phases of the Moon, and the orbit of the Moon. This reference also displays the times of sunrise and sunset, which you read by hand, and includes a corrector for the change between summer and winter time.
The watch performs these tasks using the self-winding calibre 240 C LU CL LCSO. It took more than five years to develop this movement, resulting in six patents. The movement contains 426 parts and 51 jewels, operating at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. It features a Gyromax balance, a Spiromax balance spring, and a 22K gold off-centre mini-rotor. The power reserve lasts between 38 and 48 hours.
Case Construction and Design
The white gold case measures 47 mm in diameter and 12.39 mm in thickness. Its design draws inspiration from space modules, featuring contrasting polished and sandblasted finishes along with patterned flanks. The solid case back is patterned, and the watch has a water resistance rating of 30 metres.
On the dial side, the hours and minutes of mean solar time are read with white gold skeletonized baton hands that are white varnished. The date is shown on a disk at the edge of the dial, indicated by a red varnished hand. The watch is fitted with an integrated black composite strap featuring an X-shaped pattern and a patented white gold fold-over clasp.
